Netflix said on Wednesday that the producer Dan Lin would replace Scott Stuber as the streaming company’s top film executive. Mr. Stuber was the head of Netflix Film for seven years before announcing last month that he would be leaving. During his tenure, he brought a bevy of Oscar-winning filmmakers to Netflix and helped the company push the rest of the entertainment industry into the streaming era. He will report to Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer. “While I’ve been approached many times during my past 15 years at Rideback, I could truly never imagine leaving until Bela reached out with this incredible opportunity,” Mr. Lin said in a statement.

Thrift stores are a great place to find hidden gems. A Pennsylvania Goodwill recently received an extremely rare LEGO piece that it was able to sell for a small fortune. The Dubois, Pa. store received a donation of a box of jewelry that contained something curious: a gold Bionicle mask from the popular action figure line from the early 2000s. "We didn't know what we had when we found it," a representative for Goodwill in North Central Pennsylvania told local news station WTAJ in an interview this week. "It came in a box full of random jewelry from the State College store.

London CNN —Taylor Swift might be saying “So Long, London” in her much-anticipated upcoming album but one of the city’s top museums is offering the dream job for any Swiftie. On Thursday, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) released a job listing for a Taylor Swift superfan to advise its expert curators and explain her importance to the history of art and design, in which the museum specializes. Swapping distinctive friendship bracelets, often featuring the names of Swift songs and albums or the names of the fans themselves, has become one of the rituals associated with attending an “Eras” tour concert. And friendship bracelets play a starring role in the origin story of her relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce. The V&A is one of London's most famous museums.

We won’t hear the bangs,” Elmira told CNN from her classroom, cloaked in double glazed windows that help dampen the noise of the world outside. Given the limited space in the metro school, Elmira is forced to study from home every other day. But studying underground means a school day without disruption, safe from the bombs and the fear of the sirens. In classes where children have lost their fathers, mentions of dads are carefully navigated, Rudakova told CNN. But as much as the metro school is a haven, it’s not the school the kids really want.

New York CNN —Consumers bought fewer toys in all of 2023, including during the key Christmas toy-buying period, showing that households continue to pare back on discretionary products. But toy sales in all of 2023 dropped 8%, both in dollar terms (how much consumers paid for toys) and in unit sales (meaning how many toys consumers bought). This shows that shoppers bought fewer toys but also traded down in prices to cheaper toys. “While 2023 was a challenging year for the U.S. toy industry, the four-year compound annual growth rate remains positive,” she said. Among the toys that consumers did buy in 2023, Pokémon, Barbie and Squishmallows were the top three best-selling brands last year, according to Circana.

AdvertisementIf your children are anything like mine, they will have planned their next birthday party mere moments after their previous birthday party finishes. Having a party with 60 kids felt like too muchThis is doubly awkward when you have twin boys who like completely different things — "Frozen" versus "Lego Ninjago" — and are in separate classes. But with 30 children in each of their classes, does that mean we have to host a party with 60 kids?! Obviously, outsourcing is the key to most successful kids' birthday parties. Yes, there may still be up to 60 kids coming in total, but it feels more manageable now that they won't be there all at once.

CNN —Nicole Randol — a Missouri-based mother of two boys, ages 6 and 10 — recently posted a message on a popular Facebook parenting group about Robux, the virtual gaming currency for the platform Roblox: Target was having a 40%-off sale for Robux. “I expect it to be the most exciting thing they open [on Christmas],” Randol, who bought two $100 Robux cards, told CNN. Gaming subscriptions continue to gain popularity, too. “What’s changed, naturally, is the games that families are playing.”According to ESA, more than 212 million Americans play video games on a regular basis. To be sure, prices overall are higher in 2023 despite slowed price growth, with October's consumer price index climbing to 3.2% year-over-year. Brokerage TD Cowen lowered its U.S. holiday spending estimate to 2% to 3% growth, from 4% to 5%, as it forecast flat Black Friday traffic. With many consumers squeezed by persistent inflation and high interest rates, U.S. holiday spending is expected to rise at the slowest pace in five years. A record 130.7 million people are expected to shop in stores and online in the U.S. on Black Friday this year, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates. In France, Italy, and Spain, most shoppers planned to buy clothing on Black Friday, with electronic goods coming second, according to a PwC survey. Thanksgiving Day discounts online peaked at about 28% for toys, while electronics had discounts as steep as 27%, Adobe said.
